Salina, N.Y. — A man was arrested Saturday after he hit a truck stop worker with his vehicle in Salina and drove away, deputies said.

Charles McGee, 50, of Syracuse, was arrested for hitting the worker at the Pilot Travel Center at 107 Seventh North St. and later damaging a sheriff’s office interview room, according to Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

McGee went into the truck stop before 11:50 p.m., grabbed beers and left without paying, Newton said. An employee followed McGee out of the truck stop as he was backing out, Newton said.

The worker was struck and knocked to the ground by McGee’s vehicle as he fled the truck stop, he said. McGee was gone before deputies arrived.

The worker was taken to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries and has been released, Newton said.

McGee was later spotted in Syracuse by deputies and was arrested. He was taken to sheriff’s headquarters to be interviewed. While being held, McGee damaged a wall and a table in the criminal investigation department’s interview room, Newton said.

McGee was charged with robbery, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief for damaging property.

He is currently being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center jail.
