The Mets are 21-27 and fourth in the NL East after back-to-back losses to the Guardians already this week. Cleveland (32-17, 1st AL Central) held off a Mets comeback attempt on Tuesday night, where New York was nipping at their heels all night, but ultimately fell just a point short.

Adrian Houser gave up three single-run doubles in the third inning to Cleveland’s Brayran Rocchio, Tyler Freeman and Jose Ramirez, giving Cleveland an early lead. But the Mets finally got on the board in the fifth off Mark Vientos’ solo home run and an RBI single from Francisco Lindor.

New York and Cleveland would go two-for-two for the next two innings, as the Guardians kept the Mets within a point of tying, then creating space. New York very nearly closed the gap in the eighth off a two-run homer from Starling Marte, but was unable pick up the extra point needed to tie the game.
