Deli meat company Boar’s Head has recalled a total of 71 products due to concerns over their possible connection to a listeria outbreak.
The recalled products include liverwurst, ham, beef salami, bologna and other products made at the firm’s Jarratt, Virginia, plant, according to The Associated Press. The company initially recalled over 200,000 pounds of products and later expanded the recall to 7 million pounds.

The products were sold under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names, AP said. The items went to stores across the U.S. and some were exported to other countries, including the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama.
The recall comes as federal officials are investigating a listeria outbreak that has killed at least two people and sickened nearly three dozen in 13 states, according to AP.
Nearly all of the people who have been sickened were hospitalized.
The problem was discovered when a Boar’s Head liverwurst sample collected by health officials in Maryland tested positive for listeria, AP said. Further testing showed that the type of bacteria was the same strain causing illnesses in people.
Anyone who has any of the recalled products should throw them away and not eat them. They can also return the products to stores for a refund, company officials said, according to AP.
Health officials said anyone who had any of the recalled products should thoroughly clean and sanitize their refrigerators to prevent contamination of other foods, according to AP.
Listeria infections cause symptoms including fever, muscle aches and tiredness and may cause stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. The illness is especially dangerous for people over 65 years old, people with weakened immune systems and during pregnancy, AP said.
