Syracuse, N.Y. — A school bus was struck by a bullet Wednesday afternoon on Syracuse’s North Side, police said.

One round struck the yellow bus around 2:15 p.m. in the 400 block of Highland Street, according to Sgt. Thomas Blake, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Police Department.

The bullet went through the front of the bus and hit the radiator, Blake said. Multiple casings were recovered at the scene, he said.

None of the four children on the bus were injured, Blake said. They were heading home from STEAM @ Dr. King on East Raynor Avenue, he said.

The bus was not the intended target for the shots, Blake said.

It was struck while making a right turn from Douglas Street onto Highland Street, Blake said. The bullets were fired by people on the side of the road, he said.

The bus was immobilized and towed away.

Mayor Ben Walsh said in a statement that he was relived no one was hurt in the shooting, but was “angry” and “upset” that it happened. He said he was confident police would arrest the shooters.

“Sadly, this occurrence is a reality that many parents face regularly,” he said. “It reinforces the urgency of the efforts we are undertaking every day to turn back gun violence.”

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 315-442-5222.
