Revisiting our field hockey predictions: How did we do?

Syracuse, N.Y. — All season, we enlisted the help of area media professionals who cover high school sports to participate in a weekly field hockey poll. Along with the poll, we asked our voters to predict each of the four championship games.

Here’s how the voters did with predicting the results of the championships:

James McClendon 3-1

Correct picks: Camden, Clinton, Little Falls

Pat Spadafore 3-1

Correct picks: Rome Free Academy, Clinton, Little Falls

Phil Blackwell 1-3

Correct picks: Clinton

Ryan Storie 1-3

Correct picks: Little Falls

Kenny Lacy Jr. 0-4

Correct picks: None

Before the season, the media professionals voted on where they saw Section III teams. Some of our predictions proved to be true, some were close and others were off.

Here’s what we got right and what we missed:

Where we were right

In Class D, we correctly picked Little Falls to win it all, but we had Port Byron/Union Springs at No. 2 and Morissville-Eaton at No. 3 in our preseason rankings. The Mounties defeated Morrisville-Eaton in the championship game.

Where we were close

In Class A, we had the correct championship matchup, but we incorrectly picked Cicero-North Syracuse to beat Rome Free Academy. The Black Knights edged the Northstars, 1-0, in overtime.

Where we were wrong

In Class B, we picked sectional champion Camden to finish No. 3 and sectional runner-up Holland Patent to finish first. We also had New Hartford at No. 2 but the Spartans were bounced from the tournament in the semifinals.

In Class C, we were way off. We had sectional finalists Clinton and Mount Markham ranked No. 2 and No. 5, respectively, in our preseason poll. We picked Canastota to finish first but it fell in the sectional semifinals.
