A 15-year-old hiker from Penn. broke his leg on Aug. 5 at the junction of Wright and Algonquin peaks, in the Adirondack High Peaks region.

The Wright Peak Steward alerted Ray Brook Dispatch and within two hours New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers reached the injured boy.

Rangers splinted the boy’s leg and packaged him into a litter using a backpack system for the carry-out. The carry out was difficult, requiring 11 rangers picking their way carefully over two miles of steep, rocky terrain.

Just after nightfall, the group reached the Adirondak Loj where the boy’s father took him for further medical attention.

A 23-year-old from Brooklyn got stranded on Fawn’s Leap after heavy rainfall and highwater deluged the area on Aug. 10. Five rangers set up a rope system to rescue the stranded hiker, then waded across Kaaterskill Creek to safety.

On Aug. 6, a 45-year-old woman from Watertown hurt her knee near the Slide Brook lean-to. Five rangers helped her back to the trailhead.

On the night of Aug. 6, a group of hikers used a satellite phone to call for help, reporting a 20-year-old member of their group had injured her knee on the Wolf Jaw Mountain trail. The Johns Brook caretaker and two rangers taped the hiker’s injured knee and she continued hiking to her campsite.

On Aug. 7, a neglected campfire burned one-quarter of an acre on a section of Stoney Creek Pond accessible only by boat. Three rangers and the Saranac Lake Fire Department got the fire under control; it was declared out by the next morning.

A hiker with an unstable ankle injury had to be airlifted off the summit of Mount Marcy, the state’s highest peak, on the afternoon of Aug. 8. A state police helicopter ferried a ranger to the scene as another ranger on the summit harnessed the injured hiker, who was then flown to the hospital.

A 67-year-old Plattsburgh man got lost while hiking with a group in the central Adirondacks on the evening of Aug. 8. A ranger found him on the Lake Arnold trail and hiked with him to the Lake Colden outpost. The Lake Colden Caretaker prepared a meal for the man and rangers gave him dry clothing. The next morning, they guided him to the Adirondak Loj to be reunited with his group.

Ranger dresses the wounds of a 19-year-old from New Jersey who took a spill from his electric skateboard in the Peekamoose Riparian Corridor on Aug. 5.NYSDEC

A 19-year-old from New Jersey fell off his electric skateboard on a road in the Peekamoose Riparian Corridor on Aug. 5. Rangers cleaned the young man’s cuts and wrapped a deep wound above his knee before helping him back to his campsite where he decided to seek further medical attention on his own.

A group of four hikers stopped at the Marcy Dam on the night of Aug. 8 because it was too dark and none of them had headlamps. The Marcy Dam Caretaker assisted the group to the Marcy Dam outpost where rangers met them and determined one of the hikers was suffering from low blood sugar. Rangers helped the group back to their vehicle at the Adirondak Loj.

A 73-year-old hiker from Scotia injured their leg on the Auger Falls trail, not far from the trailhead. Rangers splinted the hiker’s leg and carried them out with assistance from Speculator Fire Department and Wells EMS.
