Hey Wegmaniacs: It looks like Wegmans Food Markets is planning to open a third store in New York City.
According to the Democrat & Chronicle, signs with official Wegmans branding have started appearing over the windows of a vacant storefront on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Photos published by the West Side Rag show Wegmans’ website address posted with images of groceries at a former Bed Bath & Beyond located at 1932 Broadway, between Lincoln Center and Central Park South.
The New York Post reported in February that Wegmans chairman Danny Wegman had bought the 58,874-square-foot space, but a company spokesperson said at the time it was a “personal investment” and there were no plans to open a store there.
But now the writing’s on the wall, literally, for what will soon be Wegmans’ third location in NYC.
Wegmans previously opened a supermarket in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard in 2019 and in Manhattan’s East Village in October 2023. A company spokesperson told the D&C that Wegmans was looking at the 1932 Broadway location before committing to the Manhattan store at Astor Place, and when it became available “the timing wasn’t right” because “we were focused on getting our Astor location designed, permitted, and open to the public.”
The Upper West Side location is expected to feature a “vertical transportation” system with elevators and a escalator-like conveyor for moving shopping carts between floors. The store would occupy the lower levels of a luxury apartment building called the Grand Tier, which features a fitness center, pool, and a 24-hour doorman service.
The company has not officially announced the new store or said when it is expected to open.
Wegmans, headquartered in Rochester, operates more than 100 stores in eight states and Washington, D.C. For 27 years in a row, the family-owned supermarket chain has made Fortune’s list of the Best Companies to Work For, ranking No. 6 in April.
