The Yankees put runs on the board in all but two innings during New York’s 10-3, series-opening win on Tuesday night. Luis Gil allowed just one hit during his six-inning start, and relievers Ron Marinaccio and Michael Tonkin each gave up one as New York’s offense pummeled Astros pitchers all night.

Alex Verdugo was an absolute stud for New York in Game 1, opening scoring with a three run home run, his fifth of the season. He added an RBI single in the third to put New York up 4-1, and that’s saying nothing of his acrobatics in the outfield, where he made a smooth sliding catch in the second and a diving grab in the sixth for crucial outs during the game. Anthony Volpe, Giancarlo Stanto and Jon Berti also ran up the score throughout the night for the win.

Houston will look to course-correct on Wednesday night as they start Spencer Arrighetti on the mound opposite Carlos Rodon for the Yankees. They play Game 3 of the series on Thursday before New York hits the road against Tampa Bay starting Friday.
