Pittsburgh — Buffalo Bills wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling left Saturday’s game with a neck injury after taking a head-on hit from Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Payton Wilson late in the second quarter.
Valdes-Scantling was down for over a minute and received medical attention from athletic trainers before walking off the field on his own power. Valdes-Scantling made a short catch and was wrapped by defensive back Thomas Graham when Wilson came flying into the play late to land the hit to the head/neck area of Valdes-Scantling.
Valdes-Scantling was helped into the passenger seat of a cart and was taken to the locker room right before halftime. The Bills and Steelers played to a 3-3 tie at halftime. Valdes-Scantling is doubtful to return to the game.
The Bills signed Valdes-Scantling in May and he’s been getting up to speed on Buffalo’s offense throughout the summer. He had one target in the first preseason game against the Chicago Bears and dropped the pass on a throw from backup Mitchell Trubisky.
Bills coach Sean McDermott praised Valdes-Scantling earlier this week.
“I believe in MVS,” he said. “This is another new, veteran player that’s new to us. The playbook is new. I think he’s doing a lot of learning right now, so he may not be playing as fast as how we have normally seen him play over the years. That is one of his greatest strengths is his vertical speed. I look forward to him continuing to get the playbook down so he plays like we know he’s capable of.”
