A 30-year-old Manlius woman ran into trouble last Saturday when she went hiking in the Adirondacks with her Siberian husky.
The two were attempting to climb Giant Mountain, a 4,637-ft Adirondack High Peak overlooking Keene Valley that’s considered to be a difficult climb even for experienced hikers.
The pair had hiked approximately 1.2 miles from the trailhead when the husky injured its foot and refused to go any farther. But the big pooch was too heavy to carry out. Plus it was getting dark.
A New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest ranger came to the rescue. He bandaged the dog’s paws, then guided both dog and owner back to the trailhead in the dark.
The following reports are excerpted from DEC:
A 25-year-old hiker from New Jersey hurt her head on Aug. 1 near Curtis Pond, about half a mile east of Cranberry Lake. Rangers took a boat across the lake and hiked into the area where they found the hiker, who had become nauseated and dizzy. Rangers helped her to the boat and transported her across the lake to Cranberry Lake Rescue, who took her to the hospital.
A 26-year-old from New York City dislocated his shoulder in a fall near the observation deck at Kaaterskill Falls on Aug. 1. Rangers walked the man out to Hunter EMS who transported him to the hospital.
A 27-year-old from New Jersey under the influence of an unprescribed drug went off the trail at the Adirondack Mountain Reserve and sat down, refusing to move. When rangers arrived with his girlfriend, the hiker became irate and threw himself further downhill. The rescue team secured the man and carried him out to an ambulance.
A hiker from Baldwinsville got sick on the night of Aug. 2 approximately one-half mile from the Colden Outpost. Rangers initially had difficulty locating the hiker, but eventually found him shortly after midnight. They rehydrated him and helped him back to his vehicle.
On Aug. 3, a 66-year-old, 44-year-old, 37-year-old, and 5-year-old from Boonville all fell out of their kayaks about one mile downstream from the Lyons Falls boat launch on the Black River. A nearby boater helped the four into his boat. Rangers arrived in an air boat and brought the capsized crew to a waiting ambulance.
A 12-year-old from Brockport went missing from Massaweppie Scout Camp on July 31. Six rangers, DEC and local police, and camp staff searched through the afternoon and into the night. At 8:07 p.m., a community member at a nearby hunting camp found the child, who was reunited with his mother.
Two hikers suffered hip injuries on Aug. 4 at Chair Rock Flow. Rangers and fire department volunteers helped both hikers approximately ¾-mile to the lake, then another 5.5 miles by boat to the Cranberry Lake boat launch where they were met by an ambulance.
A camper at the Cranberry Lake Campground raised a ruckus on the Aug. 4, catching the attention of the caretaker. Two rangers and a state trooper ticketed and evicted the unruly camper for disorderly conduct and driving an unregistered vehicle.
A 23-year-old hiker near the Burnt Bridge trail in St. Lawrence County experienced what she believed was an allergic reaction with skin irritation, but no trouble breathing. Rangers hiked in and determined that she was having an anxiety attack. They calmed her down and walked her out of the woods.
