Two of the most selective colleges in the nation during the 2022-2023 school year were located in New York state, including one in Upstate New York.
Columbia University in New York City was the sixth-most selective college in the U.S. last year with an admissions rate of 3.95%, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics. That made it the most selective college in New York.
No. 2 in New York, and No. 22 nationwide, was Cornell University in Ithaca, which admitted 7.47% of its applicants last year.

The numbers reflect admissions rates for the 2022-2023 school year. Only schools with a minimum of 100 applications are included.
The schools are ranked by the percentage of applicants admitted. The federal data included figures for more than 1,600 colleges.
Nationwide, the most selective college last year was Minerva University, which is based in San Francisco, but has several sites around the world. The school accepted just 1% of its applicants last year: 208 out of more than 20,000.
In Central New York, Syracuse University accepted 51.75% of its applicants last year, which ranked the school as the 263rd-most selective in the nation. Le Moyne College in Syracuse took more than 78% of its applicants last year, ranking the school 846th in the nation for selectivity.
