Baldwinsville, N.Y. -- A 17-year-old girl has died a week after being struck by a vehicle in Baldwinsville.

Ka’Niya Cureton, a Charles W. Baker high school senior, was walking Aug. 11 on East Genesee Street when she was hit by a vehicle, state police have said.

The Baldwinsville Central School District announced that Cureton died Sunday morning.

“We are heartbroken by this devastating news and our thoughts and prayers are with Niya’s family,” Superintendent Joseph M. DeBarbieri said in an email to the district community.

On Aug. 11, troopers said Cureton walked into the road from the northern shoulder of East Genesee Street and was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Impala driven by Joella Fulwiley, 50, of Syracuse, according to Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a state police spokesman.

Cureton was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where she was in critical condition for a week.

No tickets or arrests have been made. The accident is still under investigation, troopers have said.

The district’s Crisis Response Team has been made available for students and staff, DeBarbieri said.
